Ko Moana Rakei toku ingoa

I am so happy to participate in this trip going to Hawai’i. This is my first time to go to Hawaii and also going on a long trip on the vaka. I am very grateful to be part of this program. I have been away from my homeland (Mauke) for over 2 to 3 months now after waiting for the right wind to depart but finally the wind has given us a good time to depart. We have passed by Mauke first to pick up some umu kai (underground food), and also maire and kids shouting on the sea wall saying byyyeee 3x. The thing is that the boys from Mauke couldn’t go on land to meet and to say goodbye to our families and friends because we were in a rush. We just went to pick up food and go. Thankful to the families in Mauke for providing the goods.

During our voyage we came across a squall but we managed to get away from that. The thing that I don’t really like is we do not have a fridge or freezer to put meat in it but we have put all the meats in a chilly bin with a bag of ice just to keep them cool for a week. We have to eat our meat for only a week but we have caught a couple of fish which was a barracuda and a wahoo. After all that we have to eat dry goods and that’s all we have left on board. I like every crew member on board and it makes me very happy to be partnered with some new crew mates, singing, laughing, making a lot of jokes etc. Today the crew was happy because we had caught 2x 50kg yellowfin tuna and we had to fillet it for our lunch today.
